Our skilled prosthodontists may recommend dental veneers to correct the imperfections in your teeth and give you a picture-perfect smile. With veneers, you can achieve a smile that you will feel completely confident sharing with others.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth, improving their appearance. These shells are bonded to the teeth, changing their color, shape, size or length. Veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers in particular are stain-resistant and mimic the natural translucency of natural teeth, giving you a final result that looks and feels exactly like your natural teeth.
When Are Veneers Recommended?
Veneers are an excellent option for individuals looking to correct a variety of dental issues. They are often recommended for issues such as:
- Severe tooth staining or discoloration
- Chipped, broken or excessively worn teeth
- Gaps and spaces between the teeth
- Teeth which are misaligned, uneven or irregularly shaped
The Dental Veneer Procedure
The dental veneer process involves several steps, typically requiring three trips to our prosthodontists – one for a consultation and two to make and apply the veneers.
- During the initial consultation, our prosthodontists will discuss your goals and examine your teeth to ensure dental veneers are the appropriate solution.
- The next step involves preparing the tooth for the veneer, which usually involves removing about half a millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface. This is roughly equal to the thickness of the veneer to be added to the tooth surface. Afterward, a model or impression of the tooth is made and sent to a dental lab, where the veneer is fabricated. This process can take several weeks.
- During the final visit, our prosthodontists will temporarily place the veneer on the tooth to examine its fit and color, making any necessary adjustments. The tooth is then cleaned, polished and etched to allow for a strong bonding process. A special cement is applied to the veneer, which is then placed on the tooth. Once properly positioned, a special light beam is applied to the veneer, causing it to harden and cure quickly. Final adjustments may be made as necessary.
